Note: Claude Harrison ARCA, RP was born in Leyland, Lancashire in 1922. At the age of 19, he studied art at the Harris College, Preston, which was then followed by a term at Liverpool School of Art. In 1941 during the war effort, he was conscripted by the Royal Air Force and trained as a radio operator, serving in both India and Burma. In 1948, after returning to Great Britain from Hong Kong, Harrison continued his art training at the Royal College of Art, London. Shortly afterwards, he married fellow painter, Audrey Johnson, and in 1950 the couple moved with their new-born son to Windermere in the Lake District. By now, Harrison was making a living by painting portrait commissions and had exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. During the 1950s, Harrison began to create his “paintings of the imagination”. This new style of painting would become his signature style and would eventually replace all of his private portraiture work. Harrison’s paintings are timeless contemporary allegories and his work stands apart from all other mainstream movements in British painting. During his lifetime, he completed several interesting commissions including murals at Rydale, Yorkshire, Blackpool, Lancashire, and St.Annes, Lancashire and his work is represented in both public and private collections throughout the world. Claude Harrison died aged 87 in September 2009.
