* ALEX DEWARS, DEACON BRODIE'S TAVERN, EDINBURGH

oil on canvas, signed
framed

image size 40cm x 51cm, overall size 52cm x 63cm

Note: Named after William Brodie, Born in 1741 Brodie was a deacon of the Guild of Wrights. By day he was a good citizen and businessman but at night he maintained a secret life of gambling and mistresses. His dark side meant that he had to take to burglary to pay his debts. He was eventually caught and hanged in 1788. The contrast between Deacon Brodie's respectable façade and his real nature was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Today there is still an alleyway off the Royal Mile called Brodie's Close, which is where Deacon Brodie's family lived. The tavern dates back to 1806. Alex Dewars is a figurative painter who was born in Dundee in 1980 and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art - graduating in 2003 with a BA (Honours) in Fine Art (Drawing and Painting). Alex has exhibited extensively in galleries throughout the country for over 10 years, including at the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition.
