Note: William Kennedy was born in Paisley, where he attended the Paisley School of Art. In the early 1880s he moved to Paris, where he attended the AcadĆ©mie Julian and studied with artists such as Jules Bastien-Lepage, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, RaphaĆ«l Collin, Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois, and Tony Robert-Fleury. Among the Glasgow Boys studying in Paris in the early 1880s, Kennedy's style was a synthesis of Whistler's and French and Scottish painting. William Kennedy became a prominent member of the Glasgow Boys and in 1887 he was elected President of a society formed by the group's members. Thirty-six documented examples of Kennedy's paintings are held in UK public collections including at all the major Scottish public galleries. His works now rarely appear at auction and one of our most recent examples was lot 1504 in The Scottish Pictures Auction of 14th December 2016 when a 25.5 x 36cm oil on panel (The Glasgow International Exhibition 1901) sold for Ā£9000 (hammer).
