A George II silver bougie box. London 1775, maker BD or ED, the domed removable lid with hole and pivoting crescent shaped extinguisher, the base with engraved crest depicting an arm holding a battleaxe, the side with a pierced and hinged handle, hallmarked to inside of base, 2in (5cm) diameter 1in (2.5cm) high. * The crest is thought to be for Quilter of Kent, granted 1551.. The word bougie derives from Bougiah, the name of the Algerian town from which bleached wax, used for letter seals, was imported.
