Oyster Perpetual GMT Master, Ref.1675, Serial No.3423377, made circa 1973, sold by Rolex Paris in 1975
Cal.1570 self-winding movement, matt black dial with tritium dot, baton and triangle markers, outer minutes, date aperture under magnifying lens, steel/tritium Mercedes hands, additional red 24 hour hand, centre seconds, stainless steel case with screw-down reverse and Oyster crown, faded blue/red revolving bezel graduated to 24 hours, on stainless steel Rolex Oyster folded-link Ref.7836 bracelet with 380 endlinks and 4.72 stamped folding clasp. Case, dial and movement signed.
Diameter 39mm, maximum approx. bracelet diameter 185mm.
Accompanied by the original punched Rolex Paris guarantee paper dated May 6, 1975 and Rolex booklet within a Rolex wallet. Digital scanned photographs of Niki Lauda with his friend and co-pilot Mr Erich Trog together. Further accompanied by a signed letter from Mr Erich Trog's son, confirming this watch, serial number 3423377 was gifted to his father by Austrian Formula one legend and aviator, Niki Lauda.
Niki Lauda is most famous for his life as a Formula One driver, however on a personal level, he loved aviation. He started flying in 1974 and purchased his first airplane in 1975, though he didn't obtain his pilot's license until 1976. In 1975, while racing for Ferrari, according to the consignor, en route flying to Monaco Niki bought the watch most associated with aviation, a Rolex GMT Master Ref.1675. It should be noted though, the paperwork is stamped for S.A.F Rolex, which is Rolex France, not a retailer, hence Rolex would have gifted the watch to Mr Lauda. Only a few days later on May 11th Niki Lauda went onto win the Monaco Grand Prix and both the world championship as a driver and for Ferrari as the constructor in 1975. Apparently, his co-pilot commented on his admiration for the famous pilot's watch while on their way to Monaco in 1975 and Niki later gifted the same watch to his friend while on their return to Austria. Niki Lauda's short ownership of a Rolex would make sense as the year prior, in 1974, Ferrari signed a contract with Heuer watches and video shows Niki arriving at Monaco in 1975 wearing his regular gold Heuer Carrera Ref.1158CHN, during this time he is only seen with this model Heuer and what appears to be a Cartier Tank. It isn't unreasonable to consider Niki Lauda arriving at his Ferrari team pit proudly showing off his new watch, and being informed, under no circumstances would he be allowed to wear a Rolex. Ferrari had commissioned from Heuer a special model prominently featuring their prancing horse logo, a steel digital Heuer ‘Chronosplit’ Ref.102.703-2, this was a watch Niki would wear regularly until he left Ferrari in 1978. In 1979 while driving for Brabhams, who had no watch sponsorship, Niki returned to wearing a Rolex GMT Master ‘Pepsi’, it appears, even while racing. Niki Lauder retired from racing after the 1979 season to start his Lauda Air commercial venture, however returning some years later. Offered in excellent original condition, apparently Erich Trog always cherished the special gift and rarely wore it.

CATALOGUE DESCRIPTIONS
All item descriptions, dimensions and estimates are provided for guidance only. It is the buyer’s responsibility to inspect all lots prior to bidding to ensure that the condition is to their satisfaction. Our specialists will be happy to prepare condition reports and additional images. These are for guidance only and all lots are sold ‘as found’, as per our Conditions of Sale.
WATCHES
Please note that all watches sold at auction are pre-owned and as such come with wear that is consistent with age and use. We recommend that a condition report is requested prior to bidding on any timepiece at auction. It is the responsibility of the bidder to do so and the absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Condition reports for all watches (and other items of a mechanical nature) are made without any guarantee as to the working condition beyond the point at which the report is written. Watches are not tested in house for accuracy or water tightness.
Buyers should assume that any watch purchased at auction will require regular, and often immediate, servicing. Originality of parts, forming the structure of the watch and its bracelet/strap and all constituent parts, and the internal movement, should not be assumed.
Originality is not guaranteed in any form. Unless otherwise stated, all watches will have been opened during the cataloguing process. It must therefore be assumed that the waterproof seal will need to be reinstated by a competent watch maker. If the watch caseback has not been opened and the movement has not been accessed, nothing pertaining to the movement’s originality or condition should be assumed by the buyer.
IMPORT/EXPORT
Prospective buyers are advised that sever=al countries prohibit the importation of property containing materials from endangered species, including but not limited to; rosewood, rhino horn, ivory, coral and tortoiseshell. Accordingly, prospective buyers should familiarise themselves with all relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import lots to another country. It is the buyer’s sole responsibility to obtain any relevant export or import licence. The denial of any licence or any delay in obtaining licences shall neither justify the recession of any sale nor any delay in making full payment for the lot.
ENDANGERED SPECIES
Please be aware that lots marked with the symbol Y contain material which may be subject to CITES regulations when exporting outside Great Britain. For more information visit https://www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/imports-exports/cites
