Flintlock - a fine and extremely interesting 8 bore "Man Stopper" pistol by John Richards (gun maker of the Strand, London 1775 to 1808) full walnut stock in excellent condition. Swan neck cock and original lock signed "John Richards", barrel 9" with engraved tang, brass tipped ramrod, barrel with pleasing plum coloured patina, the walnut stock with plain bag shaped grips and a silver escutcheon which carries the family crest of John James Abercorn (1756 to 1818) Lord Hamilton and 1st Marques Abercorn K.C. and Privy Councillor. Lord Hamiltons family had a long history of bravery in the field and wisdom in council, the Hamilton Crest comprises a Coronet and Crown with an Oak Tree, frame saw and the word "Through". this was incorporated in the family motto after Gilbert de Hamilton killed John de Spencer in 1325. Pursued by the enraged Spencer family he took refuge in a forest and disguised himself as a wood cutter. As the Spencer party rode towards him he shout "Through" (meaning the tree was sawn through), the Spencers rode past taken in by the disguise. This pistol was made for Lord Hamilton the Irish Peer and Politician around 1783 when he became an MP (1782-1789), probably for self protection. He was a close friend of William Pitt The Younger, and awarded the KG on 17/1/1805 and became a Privy Councillor. This piece is in excellent original condition and GWO.
