A George III Shell Butter Dish, of scallop form with a cast and applied gadrooned border to the thumb piece, and centred with a contemporary armorial, to a lobed body and raised on three scrolling shell feet, and bearing presentation inscription verso "This Ashtray constantly in use by Sir Winston Churchill, was presented in 1965 on his behalf to, Mrs Joyce Altham, by Lady Spencer Churchill in appreciation of the then forty years of devoted service to the other Club", width 4 7/8", length 5 ¾", London 1801, makers mark John Emes Provenance: "The Other Club" was a political Dining Club co-founded in 1911 by Churchill, the then Liberal Home Secretary and F E Smith (Lord Birkenhead) and was frequented on a regular basis by Churchill until December 1964, six weeks before his death. Mrs Joyce Altham was in the service of The Other Club until this time and was sister to Rear Admiral Royer Dick, a distinguished Royal Naval Officer, who served as a Naval ADC to George VI and thence by descent to the current vendor
