[STATE of REDONDA / UTOPIA / IMAGINARY VOYAGES / SIGNED] MARIAS (Javier) All Souls, London: Harvill, (1992) Paperback, VG+ Spine uncreased; The Infatuations, London: Hamish Hamilton, (2013), FIRST EDITION. SIGNED on the title page by the author. Javier cut off the title page of the Penguin edition of The Infatuations and pasted it onto the front pastedown to write a thank you for a book to which he had contributed "Elysia". He also added a chatty note which he tended to do. Association copy with Richard Grenville Clark. F/F; Bad Nature, Or With Elvis In Mexico, New York: New Directions, (1996); Between Eternities & Other Writings, London: Hamish Hamilton, (2017) FIRST EDITION. Javier did the same with this copy [ see above]; he pasted another title page for "Between Eternities" onto the front pastedown of this book with a message he signed. Association copy with Richard Grenville Clark. F/F; While The Women Are Sleeping, London: Chatto & Windus, (2010), Inscription on title page SIGNED. [ In which Marias is referring to "Mimesis" [Apocalypse Press]; Thus Bad Begins, London: Hamish Hamilton, (2016) FIRST EDITION. Once again, Javier has pasted a spare title page onto the front pastedown to send RGC a message with the punning 'beware of bad beginnings'. He is also explaining that he did not have enough time to write the Preface to RGC's projected edition of "Frederick Carter's Short Stories" F/VG+Note: In 1997, Marias was awarded the title of 'King of the Kingdom of Redonda' by its predecessor Jon Wynne-Tyson for his understanding of the kingdom and for mentioning the story of one of its previous kings, John Gawsworth, in his novel "All Souls" (Todas las almas, 1989). Javier also bought Gawsworth's surviving literary works and so on...at auction, from Wynne-Tyson in several chests. He took the title Xavier I. Wynne-Tyson was H. M. Juan II in this fictional realm. WYNNE-TYSON (John) So Say Banana Bird, 8vo, Brighton: Pythian Books, (1984). Bookplate of The Realm of Redonda on the front pastedown listing H. M. Felipe I [M. P. Shiel], H. M. Juan I [John Gawsworth] and H. M. Juan II [J.W-T]. It is SIGNED by Wynne-Tyson at the bottom of the plate; there is an ex-libris plate opposite on the ffep belonging to the recipient of this book. Also included is a loosely inserted letter from Jon to the recipient, an honorary citizen of Redonda, dated 4.5.99. VG+ in VG+ dustwrapper. (6)

Telephone & Absentee Bids

The following conditions must be satisfied before a Telephone or Absentee bid is accepted: 
All Telephone & Absentee bidders unknown to ‘John Nicholsons’ will be subject to identity checks.

This will involve:
a/ Proof of ID in the form of a passport or UK Photocard driving licence (no other forms of photo ID are acceptable).
and
b/ Proof of address will be required. For proof of Address, only official documents showing name and address will be accepted.
Both Landline and Mobile telephone numbers must be provided (even if the bidder has booked to only use one line for the bid).
A valid email address is required.

Accumulated bids exceeding £5,000

Where accumulated bids are expected to exceed £5,000 there will be the requirement to place a deposit
(the sum will vary dependant on individual lots estimated or anticipated values).
This deposit will be fully refundable should the bids prove to be unsuccessful.

Successful bids must be paid for using Cash or with Debit/Credit cards in person at the saleroom.
Distance payments will only be accepted by Bank Wire Transfer or equivalent, allowing a suitable amount of time for funds to show as cleared.

‘John Nicholson Fine Art Auctioneer and Valuers’ reserve the right to refuse any application for bid(s) that do not satisfy the conditions set out above.
In the situation where an application is refused the applicant will be notified either by email or telephone.


Lot Description and Condition

All potential buyers should be aware of the following :
If you are intending to buy from any of our sales it is your responsibility to satisfy yourself the items you are buying meet your acceptable standard.
Descriptions provided in the catalogue do not imply the item is in a good condition or without fault.
You should ensure the item is to your satisfaction by inspecting the item personally where possible.
Where personal attendance is not possible, ‘Condition Reports’ can be provided.
These reports are for general observations and by way of necessity are only subjective, and the opinion of a representative.
Ultimately it will be your decision either to bid or not, should you be successful and win the bidding ,you are entering into a legally binding contract.
As it takes time to prepare ‘Condition reports’ please ensure you make your request at least 24 hours prior to the sale.
Condition reports requested within 24 hours of the auction commencing may not be answered.
NOTE : VAT added to all charges on qualifying lots only. 

Terms & Conditions

Collection of Purchases , Title to Goods & Associated Charges :

Only when payment (cleared funds) and collection of the purchased item(s) is the purchase contract  deemed to be completed. It is the responsibility of the buyer to ensure both payment & collection are arranged in a period of time following the sale date of no more than 28 days. Should the buyer be unable to conform, they must obtain approval prior to purchase. John Nicholsons reserve the right to charge for storage and associated costs for non payment/collection that exceed the 28 day allowance. Storage charges will be levied at a rate of £5.00 + VAT per lot per day. All amounts accrued up to the date of collection must be paid before goods are released.  

If the buyer has failed to collect within a period of 2 months (from sale date) John Nicholsons’ reserve the right to re-enter the uncollected items through auction to recover the cost of storage and associated costs. At this time the buyer relinquishes all claims to ownership and any right to financial compensation.

On  the rare occasion of purchased goods being collected without cleared payment ‘John Nicholson Fine Art Auctioneer & Valuer’ retain full title to the goods on behalf of the vendor. The purchaser will not have title until the full debt has been honoured with cleared funds. (It should be noted, without title or authorisation from the title holder the buyer has no legal right to re-sell the items.)
