RARE, SPECIAL ORDER DELUXE WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. SN 9425. Cal. 38-56. Deluxe `86 with scarce 24" oct bbl, button magazine, half nickel front sight and flat top rear sight. Left side of lower tang, under the wood, is marked with assembly number "957" and "XX". Mounted with very highly figured shell grain American walnut with H-style checkered forearm and serpentine grip buttstock that has black triangle inlay and crescent buttplate. Left side of lower tang, under the wood, is marked with the assembly number "957" and "XX". Matching assembly number is also found in the top tang channel of the buttstock along with a "P". Matching assembly number is also found inside the toe of the buttplate. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter which identifies this rifle, as found, received in warehouse Oct. 8, 1887 and shipped Oct. 11, 1887 to Order #23809. The bbl length is not mentioned in this letter but all appearances show that it is orig to this rifle. PROVENANCE: Wes Adams Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains 97-98% strong orig blue with only light sharp edge wear; receiver retains most of its orig bright case colors, slightly faded on sides & top, turning silver on bottom; lever & hammer retain strong case colors on sides, moderately faded & turned dark on outer faces; buttplate retains most of its strong orig case colors, lightly to moderately faded. Wood is sound with a few light nicks & scratches and retains most of its orig piano varnish finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. This rifle has seen very little use, if any. The bolt face & loading gate show no evidence of having been used. 4-44482 JR27
