The present Biedermeier portrait of an elderly man was painted in the mid-19th century in Germany or Austria. The white shirt with a high collar is typical for this time. Furthermore, the sitter wears a vest and a jacket. At the bottom of the vest is visible the chain of a pocket watch. The portrait is of a high artistic quality and great expressive power, especially visible in the face of the man.
The work is in good condition, showing only minor wear. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 40 x 34 cm. The artist’s board measures 30 x 23.5 cm. (cko)
