Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 ā 2000)
Born Friedrich Stowasser in Vienna, the famous Austrian artist started calling himself Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser in 1949 when he began studying at the Akademie der Bildenden KĆ¼nste in Vienna. In the beginning he was strongly influenced by Schiele, later his numerous trips to Italy, France and North Africa had an increasing impact on his artistic development. In 1953 he used the spiral, which became the defining element of his painted work, for the first time. Hundertwasser described his art as āvegetativeā. He worked in many graphical techniques such as lithography, silkscreen, etching and woodcut. In the 1970s Hundertwasser also turned to architecture. His first architectural models, like those for the Eurovision show āWĆ¼nsch Dir wasā, presented his ideas of roof afforestation, tree tenants and the window right tenant. From the early 1980s Hundertwasser operated as an "architecture doctor". The construction of the residential complex for the City of Vienna (with the architects Krawina and Pelikan) in the Lƶwengasse was the beginning of his actual work in the field of architecture. In collaboration with Springmann and Pelikan, Hundertwasser completed many projects in Europe and overseas in the following years. In addition Hundertwasser created numerous art objects and designed posters, stamps, flags, coins, books and porcelain objects. He designed the āVindobonaā, a passenger ship of the DDSG Blue Danube (1995), and a Boeing 757 for the airline, Condor, Germany (not realized). On February 19, 2000, Friedensreich Hundertwasser died on his return from New Zealand, as one of the best-known and most influential artists in Europe. (fea)
