Otto Pilny (1866-1936), Slave Market in the Sahara, 19th C.
Oil on canvas
Egyt/Switzerland, late 19th century
Otto Pilny (1866-1936) - Swiss painter of Czech origin
Signed ‘OTTO PILNY.’ lower right
Dimensions: 106 x 158 cm
Gilt wooden stucco frame: 155 x 209 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: in family ownership since 1923
A typical erotic and large-sized Orient motif of the painter. The current highest auction record for a ‘slave market’ by Pilny is more than €60,000
Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 24,000 Euro

Already highly sought after during his time, the Orient painter Otto Pilny (1866-1936) painted compositions, which besides an erotic component are characterized by warm, orange tones – often at sunset – and a vibrant atmosphere. Since the 18th century a romanticized view of the Orient spread in the art within the scope of European domination aspirations over the Islamic world. Especially painters at the turn of the 20th century dedicated to the topic as a symbol of sensuality and decadence.

Condition:
The work is in very good condition, showing minor framing marks. No evidence of retouching under UV light. The frame shows some losses. The painting dimensions are 106 x 158 cm, while the frame measures 155 x 209 cm.

Otto Pilny (1866-1936)
The Swiss Orient painter Otto Pilny was a court painter to the Viceroy of Egypt. He studied first in Prague and then lived for a time in Vienna before settling in Zurich. In 1875, he traveled for the first time to Egypt and remained there for two years. The Orient was henceforth to be the main source of his painting. He harbored a special interest for the customs of the Bedouins. From 1889 until 1892, he traveled a second time to Egypt. There the Egyptian King, Abbas II, was pleased with his paintings and commissioned him to decorate the Medjidije. Pilny’s son, Alexander Otto Pilny (1897-1958), was also a painter. (cko)
