WHITTLE FRANK: (1907-1996) English Air Commodore, inventor and engineer, credited with the invention of the turbojet engine which culminated in the first British jet-engined aircraft, the Gloster E.28/39, flying on 15th May 1941. An historically important T.L.S., F Whittle, two pages, 4to, Ladywood Works, Lutterworth, Rugby, 18th May 1940, to Air Vice Marshal Arthur W. Tedder. Whittle writes to Tedder following a talk they had together on 10th May, and forwards two memoranda which he hopes will be of interest, continuing ā€˜That talk did me a lot of good, and had a very beneficial effect on my peace of mind. I did not mean to say by that that I like the arrangements which the Air Ministry have made any better than I did, but I hope that we shall be able to overcome the main potential sources of trouble by making special arrangements to deal with themā€™, adding that relationships with the Rover Company are as good as he could hope them to be (ā€˜the engineers concerned will have to do the best they can to keep the atmosphere sweetā€™), expressing his desire to meet Tedder again so that he can explain some difficulties to be guarded against, remarking ā€˜An example of the sort of thing which causes me a lot of worry is the very serious delay which has occurred with the experimental apparatus for a pressure combustion test set. In this matter we came to the conclusion that such a set was urgently necessary early in Februaryā€¦..and in the meantime we got on with the W.X. idea. We came to the conclusion early in March that the W.X. scheme was the best all-round one for the purposeā€¦..we sent the W.X. layout drawing to the B[ritish] T[homson-] H[ouston] on the 18th April, since when nothing has been settled. I took the law into my own hands two days ago and gave the B.T.H. instructions to proceed on the W.X. scheme, saying at the same time that it was probable that so much experimental work on combustion was contemplated that if they had a suitable motor driven compressor scheme it would be required as wellā€™. In concluding Whittle conveys another concern to Tedder, ā€˜One quite different matter which I think needs urgent consideration now is how this development is going to be affected if the enemy makes strong air attacks on this Country. It seems to me that if Sheffield were intensively bombed we should be indefinitely held up, as the production of the special steel forgings is the main bottle neck of the job. I do not think it is wild to suggest that the removal of the whole of this development work to the other side of the Atlantic should be contemplatedā€™. Accompanied by the two memoranda prepared and forwarded by Whittle, the first a typed D.S., F Whittle S/L, six pages, folio, n.p. (Lutterworth, Rugby), 22nd April 1940, titled General Memorandum on the Design and Production of Gyrone Engines and providing a brief outline of the design requirements, summarised by Whittle under various headed paragraphs including Performance, Minimum weight, Simplicity in starting and control, Mechanical reliability, Ease of maintenance, Suitability for quantity production and Cheapness of manufacture, in part, ā€˜The purpose of the engine is to give aircraft the maximum possible performance for their particular duty, i.e. for an interceptor fighter, high rate of climb, high maximum speed, etc, and for a bomber, high speed and load carrying capacity with long range..The Gyrone engine is at present primarily intended for interceptor fighters, and hence the starting arrangements must be such that the time to get off the ground must be an absolute minimum...Control must be simple and reliable, and the engine must be quick in responseā€¦ā€¦the Gyrone engine is mechanically so simple that there are very few parts to go wrong, and provided that all materials used are sound and not unduly overloaded, there should be little fear of mechanical breakdownā€¦..the engine must be made as easy as possible to remove from the aeroplane, and should be easy to strip and re-assembleā€¦Ā and the second a typed D.S., F Whittle, four pages (thin carbon paper), folio, n.p. (Lutterworth, Rugby), 17th May 1940, titled Memorandum on the Design of Gyrone Engines, outlining the general nature of the design and development problems of Gyrones, in part, ā€˜The Gyrone engine is mechanically simple, but the design engineers require to have an extremely wide range of engineering knowledge and experience because the design covers an unusually large field of problemsā€¦..Both turbine and compressor theory overlaps so far into the field of aerodynamic knowledge that a sound grounding in aerodynamics is necessary to the Gyrone designer. Because of the relative ignorance of commercial designers a vicious circle has been operating in the history of the gas turbineā€¦..the designer must.. have in mind many factors of operation which are peculiar to the aeroplane, e,g. centrifugal forces and gyroscopic effects in turns, atmospheric conditions at different heights and in different parts of the world etc. It is here that the turbine designer finds himself on unfamiliar groundā€¦..when he is faced with the problem of a turbine for aircraft purposes he finds himself in a completely strange world ....It is of course obvious that these [design] stages overlap very considerably, and the fact that it is an aero engine has to be borne constantly in mind from the earliest moment. A fascinating and highly important set of documents outlining Whittleā€™s vision for a jet-engined aircraft, which would finally come to fruition almost exactly one year later. Some light overall age wear, a few minor rust stains to the upper left corners, and the second memorandum with some creasing and a few minor tears and small areas of paper loss. G to VG, 3Ā Arthur Tedder (1890-1967) 1st Baron Tedder. British Marshal of the Royal Air Force.Ā Ā Whittle had the original idea for jet propulsion in 1928 and made it the subject of his thesis, while at RAF College Cranwell the same year. He was so certain of his calculations that in January 1930 he filed a patent for his turbo-jet engine idea (granted in October 1932). In 1939 the British Air Ministry placed a contract for the W.1 engine to be flight tested on the new Gloster E.28/39 aircraft. At this point Whittle realised that it would be some time before Rover could deliver an engine and, unwilling to wait, cobbled together an engine from spare parts, creating the W. 1X which ran for the first time in December 1940, the same month in which Whittle suffered a nervous breakdown and left work for a month. During taxiing tests on 7th April 1941, the W.1X non-airworthy engine powered the E.28/39 where it unofficially became the first British turbojet to be airborne, taking to the air for two or three short hops of several hundred yards at about six feet from the ground. The W.1 flew officially in the E.28/39 on 15th May 1941.Ā The present documents are of great importance in the history of aviation, the jet engineā€™s invention being one of the most important of the 20th century.Ā Provenance: Acquired by our vendor from John Wilson (Autographs) Ltd., Witney, Oxfordshire, on 24th June 1980. Buyers Terms & Conditions

1. Interpretation

1.1. "Auctioneers" means " International Autograph Auctions Europe S.L. "

1.2. "Catalogue" means the brochure relating to a sale (including any addendum thereto) and any other related documents and advertisements.

1.3. "Conditions" means these terms and conditions of sale

1.4. "Hammer Price" means the price at which a lot is knocked down by the Auctioneers to the Purchaser.

1.5. "Purchaser" means the person who purchases a lot or lots pursuant to these conditions.

1.6. "Seller" means the person who is selling the lot or lots pursuant to these conditions.

1.7. "VAT" means Value Added Tax.

 

2. Bidding

2.1. The highest bidder for each lot shall be the Purchaser of that lot.

2.2. No person shall be entitled to retract a bid. The Auctioneers reserve the right of refusing any bid without giving any reason and of altering, adding to, dividing, consolidating or withdrawing any lot or lots for sale.

2.3. The Auctioneers reserve the right to fix a reserve price for any lot at a figure no higher than the lower estimate.

2.4. The Auctioneers reserve the right to bid on behalf of the Seller on lots which are subject to a reserve price. The Seller shall not be entitled to bid where the Auctioneers have reserved such a right.

2.5. In the case of a dispute as to any bid the Auctioneers may immediately determine the dispute or put up the lot again at the last undisputed bid or withdraw the lot.

2.6. The Auctioneers will accept written commission bids free of charge from any person who is unable to attend the sale. Bids will also be accepted by telephone and fax at the sender's risk.

2.7. Lots will not normally be sold at less than two-thirds bottom estimate.

 

3. Payment

3.1. Each Purchaser shall give in his name and address and proof of identity (if required) to the Auctioneers at a sale and shall if required pay such deposit as the Auctioneers may specify.

3.2. The Purchaser shall pay the Hammer Price together with a premium of 30.25% on the Hammer Price (this amount includes VAT and must not be shown separately or claimed as input tax). By the making of any bid the Purchaser acknowledges that his attention had been drawn to this fact and that he assents to the Auctioneers receiving the said commission. A 25% premium will be payable by Purchasers outside the European Union (EU). Zero-rated goods such as books will be subject to a premium of 25% whether within or outside the EU unless entered by a VAT registered Seller.

3.3. Payments for lots must be made in cash, bankers draft or cheque guaranteed by the bank upon which it is drawn. Lots will not be released against cheques from Purchasers unknown to the Auctioneers until cleared by such Purchaser's bank. Payment is accepted by Visa and Mastercard. A surcharge of 3% plus VAT will be levied to accounts settled by credit cards for non EU buyers. Payment is also accepted by most debit cards with no surcharge.

3.4. Overseas clients are requested to settle accounts by USA Dollars or Sterling bank transfer (details upon request), by Euro cheques, by Visa or Mastercard (a surcharge of 3% plus VAT [clients outside the EU exempt from VAT] will be levied to accounts settled by this method) or if payment is made on personal accounts in foreign currency the client is requested to add the equivalent of a further ā‚¬10 to cover bank conversion charges. The Auctioneer reserves the right to claim back from the Purchasers any shortfall due to bank charges or currency fluctuations on that account.

3.5. No lots will be released by the Auctioneers until receipt of payment in full from the Purchaser.

 

4. Risk

4.1. All lots shall be the sole risk of the Purchaser from the fall of the hammer.

4.2. The Purchaser shall take all lots in the condition in which he finds them. It is the responsibility of all intending Purchasers to satisfy themselves by inspection or otherwise as to the authenticity in the authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot.

 

5. Liability

5.1. Neither the Seller of any lot nor the Auctioneers make or give nor has any person in the employment of the Auctioneers any authority to make or give any representation or warranty in relation to any lot and any implied conditions or warranties are excluded.

5.2. All statements contained in the Catalogue as to the authenticity, attribution, genuineness, origin, authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot are statements of opinion only and are not to be taken as or implying statements or representations of fact. Lots are sold subject to all faults and errors in description or otherwise.

5.3. Notwithstanding the provisions of paragraphs 5.1. and 5.2. of these Conditions in the event of a dispute as to authenticity of any lot(s) the item or items in question should be returned to the Auctioneers within 21 days of receipt by the Purchaser of such lot(s) together with a formal statement by a recognised expert The Auctioneers shall at their option and without admission of liability reimburse the price paid by the Purchaser in respect of such lot(s). This does not constitute an approval service.

5.4. Neither the Auctioneers nor the Seller shall be responsible for any loss, damage or injury occasioned to or sustained by any person on the premises before, during or after a sale save in respect of death or personal injury caused by negligence of the Seller or the Auctioneers.

 

6. Capacity of Auctioneers

For all purposes of a sale the Auctioneers shall be deemed to be the agent of both the Seller and the Purchaser and they shall not be considered responsible for any default on the part of either the Seller or Purchaser.

 

7. Delivery

7.1. Lots will only be released once payment in full has been received from the Purchaser.

7.2  An insurance charge of 1.8 % plus VAT will be applied to all invoices for packages sent from our offices

7.3. Postage is subject to VAT at 21% within the EU

7.4. The Auctioneers will provide full customs declarations on the Hammer Price plus the Purchaser's premium and Purchaser's shall be responsible for any customs charges made by the country of import.

7.5. A charge will be made for the packing & shipping of deliveries which is subject to VAT at 21% within the EU.

 

8. Auctioneers Remedies

In the event that the Purchaser fails to pay for any lot(s) in full pursuant to these Conditions then the Auctioneers shall be entitled:

8.1. to rescind the sale of the relevant lot(s)

8.2. to resell the lot(s) without further notice either by public or private sale and the deficiency (if any) arising from such second sale together with all charges and expenses relating to the same shall be the responsibility of the defaulting Purchaser and shall be recoverable as and for liquidated damages.

 

9. Jurisdiction

These Conditions shall be governed by Spanish law and the parties submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Spanish courts.

 

Online Bidding
