commemorative / commemorate

A hitherto unrecorded pearlware oviform jug, probably of anti-Burdett interest, the handle and spout lined in blue, the body inscribed ‘Clementson for Ever’ in yellow upon an underglaze brown ground, circa 1810, 126mm, restored spout * The shape of this jug with it’s pronounced sparrow beak spout and underglaze blue decoration dates it from as early as 1810. John Clementson (1780-1856) succeeded his father (also John) to the post of Deputy Sergeant of Arms to the House of Commons in 1804. In 1810 he unsuccessfully attempted to exercise the Speaker’s warrant, to arrest and commit to the Tower, Sir Francis Burdett MP, the radical reformer, for his support for the right of the Press to freely report Parliamentary proceedings. This was accomplished by force some days later amidst widespread rioting making Burdett, for a time, even more popular than John Wilkes. See lot 69 in this sale.
