Description
Attributed to RICHARD WILSON, R.A. (1714 - 1782)
"Italianatte river scene with fishermen, Snowdon"
Black chalk and stump on buff paper, 26 x 40 cm.
£2,000-3,000
Provenance:
Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 3rd Baronet, Wynnstay Ruabon, according to the inscription on the mount.
Catalogue note:
Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 3rd Baronet (ca.1692-1749) was a leading Welsh landowner, Tory and prominent Jacobite sympathiser. An opponent of Robert Walpole, Williams-Wynn helped engineer his downfall in 1742 and engaged in negotiations with the exiled Stuarts prior to the 1745 Jacobite Rising but did not participate himself. He died in 1749 in a hunting accident.
The view in the present work is possibly a cappricco based on Snowdon from the Llyn Nantlle Art Gallery. Wilson has steepened the mountain slopes in order to dramatise the composition. See Snowdon from Llyn Nantlle Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
