'A Band of Damned Yankee Nitpickers ..'Cormac McCarthy Archive. An important archive of letters and pre-publication copies by this major Southern American novelist of Irish extraction, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, James Tait Black Memorial Prize and many other awards, widely regarded as one of the three or four leading living American writers, sometimes mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Prize (he was one of the favourites in 2010). From the collection of Dr. Philip Murray of Sligo, including- A blue folder containing five original letters (one TLS and four ALS, 1pp-4pp), 1981, mostly with original postally used envelopes, to his fellow writer and editor Lawrence (Larry) Millman of The Agni Review. The second letter (undated, envelope postmarked 22 June 1981), comments provocatively on coverage in the 'Yankee Press' of a motel shooting, in which a policeman shot two people, apparently by mistake. 'What the Yankee press failed to mention - in every account - was that he said he was sorry. Not only that, but he expressed his willingness to make restitution in any reasonable & mutually acceptable fashion to the families of both of the dead people .. Jesus, Harry, are people not entitled to make mistakes any more? .. Anyway, we sure as hell don't need a band of damn Yankee nitpickers jumping up & down & chortling over what they see as 'decadence' in the old South West ..' In the next letter, undated, he apologises for these comments [presumably in response to Millman's reply] and says 'My letter was supposed to be a joke. I thought the story was absolutely outrageous & only wanted to embroider it a little further.' The other letters comment on his current writing, other books and films, the publishing climate and other matters. The last letter is on the headed paper of Hausman's Laundry of Broadway, New York. An important, revealing and controversial correspondence, in excellent condition.-A red folder containing seven original ALS to the Sligo collector Dr. Philip Murray, 1990-2005, mostly with original postally used envelopes, one referring to his nephew, a medical student, who wishes to do a rotation in family practise [sic] in Ireland, another [1993] referring to 'a big flap' about his last book, 'even though I ignore this kind of thing it is still an intrusion and a bother. If I can get these next two books finished and done before I'm a doddering wreck I think I'll take a nice long trip. Maybe come to Ireland for a while ..'.-Three box files containing an important collection of pre-publication texts, some signed, with magazine articles and other special items by McCarthy, including -All the Pretty Horses [1992], pre-publication cyclostyled typescript with covering ALS from Sonny Mehta at publishers Alfred Knopf, inscribed on t.p. by McCarthy to Dr Philip Murray;-All the Pretty Horses. Fisketjon at publishers Alfred Knopf;-The Road [2006], pre-publication cyclostyled typescript;-The Road, film script by Joe Penhall [2008], cyclostyled typescript;-Three Variant Uncorrected Proof Copies of All the Pretty Horses, (one signed by the Author)-The Counselor. A screenplay by Cormac McCarthy, n.d. Cyclostyled typescript, corrections in blue biro evidently by McCarthy.-Vanity Fair, issue of August 2005, 3 copies, containing an interview with McCarthy about his book No Country for Old Men;-The Cormac McCarthy Journal, 11 issues, 2005-2011; - The Counselor (hard back / paperback / movie edition copy)- The Sunset Limited (hard back / paperback / advance copy)-A photograph of Cormac McCarthy with Philip Murray, Sligo 2005; Two Posters -A collection of magazines and newspapers (about ten) with material relating to McCarthy's work.
