A William IV mahogany travelling toilet set with silver mounted fittings by Archibald Douglas, London 1832-35, fitted with six silver covered glass boxes, a plated shaving brush, four bottles and a tray of ivory and steel implements including two razors, two scissors, a penknife and other items, mostly engraved ‘M.B.’, the mahogany case with brass banding, corners and concealed handles, engraved with a crest, a mirror inside the cover, the lock stamped ‘Bramah 124 Piccadilly’, 30.5cm (12in) wide. The punning crest of BARNARD of Bartlow, Cambridgeshire. Sir John Barnard, Lord Mayor of London in 1737, is recorded having a whole bear on his shield and half a bear for his crest. His motto was BEAR AND FORBEAR.
