A Staunton ivory chess set box by Jaques, London, circa 1870, the rectangular Carton Pierre box designed by Joseph Williams, the intricately decorated lid with a lozenge motif centred with a roundel incorporating a bishop`s mitre, knight`s visored helmet, and king and queen`s crowns, the castle form base with angle crenellated bastions divided, to the long sides, by Romanesque arches and figures and, to the short sides, by chess boards, with original claret velvet lining, and with original label to base, 10.5cm high, 21cm wide, 15.5cm deep.
