[Bulwer, John]. Chirologia: Or the Naturall Language of the Hand. Composed of the Speaking Motions, and Discoursing Gestures thereof. Whereunto is Added Chironomia: Or, the Art of Manuall Rhetoricke. Consisting of the Naturall Expressions, digested by Art in the Hand, as the chiefest Instrument of Eloquence, by Historical Manifesto`s, 2 parts in one, 1st ed., 1644, six engraved plates, lacking additional engraved title to each part, B7 torn with some loss of text, one or two corners torn away, marginal insect damage to errata leaf at end, a little light soiling, first few leaves detaching, previous owner signature to title, later calf, rebacked, a little rubbed, 8vo. G-M 3346; Wing B5462 & B5466. Ò[The hand] speaks all languages, and as an universall character of Reason, is generally understood and knowne by all Nations, among the formall diffferences of their Tongue. And being the onely speech that is naturall to Man, it may well be called the Tongue and generall language of Humane Nature, which, without teaching, men in all regions of the habitable world doe at the first sight most easily understand.Ó (page 3).
