Philippines, Ifugao, fine carved standing ancestral figure, bulul, 1st half 20th century,
with carved collar bones, knees and hands and feet. With layers of encrusted black offering patina. Bulul are used in ceremonies associated with rice production and with healing. Provenance, bought by Rob Kok from William Beyer (Manilla between 1975 and 1980 and through descent of his family Rob Kok opened his Gallery Mabuhay on June 19th 1975 in the Berenstraat in Amsterdam with an exhibition 'The Art of Ifugao' (see the images). This figure was part of Rob Kok's personal collection [1] Creation of a bulul involves alwen bulul ritual by a priest to ensure that the statue gains power. The bulul is treated with care and respect to avoid the risk of the spirits of the ancestors bringing sickness. The figures are placed together with the rice in the house or granaries to bring a plentiful harvest. Bulul is important to ifugaos because they believe they can protect and multiply the rice and help make the harvest abundant.
