synthetic polymer paint on Belgian linen 151 x 78 cm ARTWORK DETAILS Maggie Watson began painting at 60 years of age and became the senior female artist at Yuendumu by the time of her death in 2004. Though she created paintings for 15 years and was never a prolific artist, she was a leader amongst a group of women artists who began to challenge the dominance of menÕs acrylic painting in the Central Desert region from the mid 1980s. The emergence of these women in Yuendumu and simultaneously in Utopia (amongst Anamtjerre and Alyawarre peoples) challenged the notion that men were the sole guardians of the visual life of these communities. Foremost amongst the major themes depicted by Maggie Watson was the important Warlpiri womenÕs Dreaming of the Karntakurlangu. This epic tale recounts the travel of a large group of ancestral women, the hair string belts and Ngalyipi (Tinospora smilacina or snake vine) they used to carry their babies and possessions, and the magical emergence of digging sticks which, quite literally, thrust themselves out of the ground before the women during the Dreaming, thereby equipping them for their vast travels. As the women danced their way across the desert in joyous exultation they clutched the digging sticks in their outstretched hands. Dancing in a long line they created important sites and encountered other Dreamings. Hundreds of these women travelled on the long journey first toward the east, then to the north, then south collecting plants and foods with both medicinal and ceremonial uses. They visited many sites, resting at some, going underground at others and later re-emerged morphing into different, sometimes malevolent, beings. These powerful ancestral women were involved in initiation ceremonies and used human hair-string spun and rubbed with special red ochre and fat as part of their magic just as women do to this day when performing ceremonies that connect them with their Jukurrpa. The digging sticks are regarded as symbolically manifest as desert oaks growing in their homeland near Mina Mina, a central location for much of the story that relates to Warlpiri lands west of Yuendumu. Maggie WatsonÕs paintings are characterised by the linear precision created by dots applied in alternating bands of colour. When viewed in varying arrays across the canvas these meticulously applied textured striations impart a rhythmic trancelike quality thereby evoking the movement of lines of women as they dance, and their repeated chanting during ceremony. The Buyer is responsible to organise the Delivery of the Lot. Cooee Art will provide the Buyer with a list of courier companies but will not organise or take responsibility for the delivery of artworks. Cooee Art will not release the artwork until the invoice has been paid in full. (unless we have made a special arrangement with the Buyer). Storage Fees may be charged for items that have not been collected after 7 days of the sale at a rate of $5 per Lot per day. 

ALL collection notifications, shipping requests and requests for carrier recommendations are to be emailed to our Post Sale Services email address registry@cooeeart.com.au. Proof of identification is required upon collection and lots not collected within seven days of the sale may incur costs associated with external storage and freight.

Conditions of Sale

This notice is addressed by Cooee Art MarketPlace to any person who may be interested in a Lot, including registered Bidders and potential Bidders (including any eventual Buyer of the Lot).

1. OUR ROLE
In its role Cooee Art MarketPlace acts solely for and in the interests of the Seller. Our job is to sell the Lot at the highest price obtainable at the Sale to a Bidder.

2. DESCRIPTION OF GOODS
The Seller and Cooee Art MarketPlace warrant that the goods are as described in the catalogue and that the seller has clear title to the works that they are offering for sale.

3. LOTS
Lots are sold to the Buyer on an "as is" basis, with all faults and imperfections. It is your responsibility to examine any Lot in which you are interested.

4. DESCRIPTIONS OF LOTS AND ESTIMATES AND CONDITON
Estimates are printed beside the Entry in the catalogue. They are an expression of Cooee Art MarketPlace's opinion of the range where Cooee Art MarketPlace thinks the Hammer Price for the Lot is likely to be; it is not an Estimate of value.
In respect of most Lots, we will produce a Condition Report regarding the Lot's physical condition upon request. Cooee Art MarketPlace is not entering into a contract

with you in respect of the Condition Report and accordingly does not assume responsibility to you in respect of it. Notwithstanding the aforementioned we undertake to prepare any Condition Report honestly, with integrity, and in good faith.

5. BIDDING
We do not accept bids from any person who has not completed to our satisfaction the Registration and Bidding Form. In addition anyone intending to place bids by telephone must apply for and complete a Telephone Bidding Form before the Sale. If you intend to bid through a third-party site (on-line aggregator) you must register your intention to do so and warrant that the information you provide is true and accurate. In all cases you must provide proof of identity, and your intended method of payment.

6. REGISTRATION
We may refuse entry and registration to our Website and our Sale and expressly reserve the right not to grant a Paddle to any applicant.

7.  WINNING BIDS
The Buyer will be the Bidder who makes the highest bid for any Lot providing this bid equals or exceeds the Reserve set prior to the sale by the seller as per their contract with Cooee Art Marketplace.

8. ADDITIONAL CHARGES
A Buyer's Premium of 15% of the Hammer Price is payable on all lots. Collection and delivery is the responsibility of the buyer on lots.

Online Bidding
Cooee Art MarketPlace offers an online bidding service via the-saleroom.com for bidders who cannot attend the sale.
In completing the bidder registration on www.the-saleroom.com and providing your credit card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with ’Cooee Art MarketPlace’ :
1.                 authorise ’Cooee Art MarketPlace’ , if they so wish, to charge the credit card given in part or full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via the-saleroom.com, and
2.                 confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit card details to ’Cooee Art MarketPlace’  through www.the-saleroom.com and agree that ’Cooee Art MarketPlace’  are entitled to ship the goods to the card holder name and card holder address provided in fulfilment of the sale.
Please note that any lots purchased via the-saleroom.com live auction service will be subject to an additional 3% commission charge + VAT at the rate imposed on the hammer price
 



9. TAX
Goods and Service Tax will be charged only on the Buyer's Premium, save for cases where the artwork is owned by a GST registered entity (e.g. a registered company or superannuation fund). Artworks owned by GST registered entities will be displayed in

the Sale Catalogue with a Dagger alongside the Lot Number. This symbol indicates that a work of art is subject to GST and therefore GST is applied to both the Hammer Price and the Buyer's Premium.

10. PAYMENT
As a buyer you must ensure that you have readily available funds to pay the Purchase Price and the Buyer's Premium to us in full before making a bid for the Lot. If you are a successful Bidder, payment must be made no later than the end of the second working day after the Sale so that all sums are cleared by the seventh working day after the Sale.
