MAZZELLA, Scipio. Sito, et antichità della città di Pozzuolo. Naples: Gioseppe Bonsadino, 1594. 2 parts, each with separate title, one large folding woodcut view of Pozzuoli and 28 half-page illustrations (including repeats), large ornamental initials. (Title very lightly soiled, text next to folding view with long but clean tear, a few margins with minor waterstaining.) [Bound with:] FALCO, Bendetto di. Descrittione dei luoghi antiqui di Napoli. Naples: Giovanni Battista Cappelli, 1589. (Occasional light spotting.) Together 2 works in one volume, 8° (140 x 96mm). Contemporary German pigskin over wooden boards, lavishly stamped in blind, front cover with a central panel depicting Emperor Maximilian II, above the initials H P S L, below dated 1596, on the rear cover central panel with his arms (lightly soiled with a couple of small stains on covers). Provenance: 'Biblioth. Hanuner. Ex Ebner. Norib. 1818' (inscription on endpaper, describing both works below as rare) -- 'JdL' (bookplate) -- occasional underlining in ink and short notes in margin.

Rare second editions of the first work. Mazzella’s guide on the numerous Roman and Greek ruins around Pozzuoli was first published in 1591, di Falco’s guide on Naples in 1549. First work: Adams M-954; cf. Cicognara 4317 & 4318: 'elegante libretto per le sue erudite notizie'; EDIT CNCE 34268. Second work: EDIT CNCE 17175; cf. Adams F-124 (1549 ed.).
