RODCHENKO, Alexander (1891-1956) and Varvara STEPANOVA (1894-1958) – Pervaia Konnaia. [The First Cavalry.] Moscow: OGIZ-IZOGIZ, [1938]. 4° (350 x 300 mm). Numerous monochrome photographs in various tints, maps, and tipped-in illustrations, some of these printed in colour. (One gathering loose and with short marginal tears, one plate detached but present, light wear.) Original pale-green coated cloth, front cover blocked in red and white and lettered in red, ruled in red up the whole spine, illustrated endpapers (extremities rubbed, light soiling).

'ONE OF THE MOST SUMPTUOUS OF SOVIET PROPAGANDA BOOKS’ (The Photobook). The First Cavalry holds an important place in the early mythology of the Soviet Union – its legendary prowess in battles between the Reds and the Whites, earned it a mythical invincibility, and it came to represent the inevitable triumph of the Soviet way. Pervaia Konnaia was published at the height of Stalin's purge, and was quickly withdrawn and reconfigured to remove the portraits of individuals that had fallen out of favour. Consequently copies often have a varying number of plates; this copy appears to belong to the censored issue. Rare: AE and ABPC record only two copies at auction in over 40 years. Karasik, Great Stalinist Photographic Books, pp. 158-162; cf. The Photobook, vol. I, pp.170-71.
