MEGGED, Aharon (b.1920). Hagadat ha-Atzma'ut [Haggadah of Independence]. Tel Aviv: Moshe Shoham, 1952. 8° (200 x 152mm). 36pp. Text printed in black and blue, illustrated throughout. Original stapled wrappers, covers printed in blue, green and yellow. (Light staining to covers, upper corner of front wrapper faintly creased, tiny marginal nick to lower cover).
EXTREMELY RARE. Published by the public relations division of the Israeli Defence Forces General Staff, the work tells the story of the birth of the state of Israel in the format of the Passover Haggadah. Aharon Megged, kibbutznik, playwright, author, and literary editor, who later served as Israel's cultural attaché in London (1960-1971), employed bold cover art and photographic realism. However, by replacing the name of God in a few critical passages with that of the IDF, Megged's ground-breaking publication was deemed controversial and profane by traditional religious authorities. Ten thousand copies meant for circulation within the Israeli military were consequently destroyed, and there are few examples in commerce today. This copy does not appear to contain the bifolium of lyrics found in some copies.
