NAVAL – SHIPS’ LOGS. Manuscript logs of two voyages by George Law (shipowner and merchant of Kingston, Jamaica), ‘Journal of Passage from Jamaica In the Ship Marquiss Rockingham, John Barrow Master, for Liverpool’, 18 June – 3 September 1771, and ‘Journal of a Passage from Liverpool In the Ship Bridge, William Rogerson Master, for Kingston Jamaica’, 24 April – 13 June 1773, the logs conscientiously recording course, wind, weather, ships encountered and other sailing incidents, a quarto bifolium loosely inserted, recording at length a visit to Plymouth Town in Montserrat on 9 June, 22 leaves, 4to and folio (322 x 205mm), in a single volume, marbled paper wrappers (minor wear to wrappers).
Observations on Plymouth, Montserrat: ‘Was not a little surprised at the Surve [sic] which continually makes upon the shore w[hi]ch renderd our Landing difficult. This Day happen[in]g to be their Day of Muster brought together a large Concourse of People from the parts adjacent who are of all other Men that I have seen in any part of the World the tallest & bear the best proportion. The Women also are remarkably handsome. They are at the same time rather impolite and very willing to shew their Importance … Plimouth should properly have been calld new Rome for tho it stands not upon 7 Hills tis situated immediately at their Foot. It’s situation is agreeable from its being romantick …’. The town of Plymouth was abandoned in 1997 after being destroyed by volcanic activity.
