Description
SPARRMAN, Anders (1747-1820). Tal. Om den tilvaxt och nytta, som vetenskaperne i allmanhet, sardeles natural-historien, redan vunnit och ytterligare kunna vinna, genom undersokningar i soder-hafvet. Stockholm: Johan Georg Lange, 1778. 39 pp. Engraved vignette pasted to title as issued. 8° (210 x 135 mm). Modern boards. Provenance: R D[avid] P[arsons] (booklabel).
Apparently the first edition and a rare work. Sparrman was botanist on Cook's second voyage. Here he provides an overview of the present state of botanical knowledge in the South Seas, based on Cook's first two voyages as well as Julien Marie Crozet's visit to Tasmania and New Zealand. An early book to focus on New Zealand, but not recorded in the New Zealand National Bibliography or by Cook bibliographers Beddie or Holmes. Bibliography Reference Du Reitz, 1217.
