Description
MAUROLICO, Francesco (1494-1575). Martyrologium … Francisci Maurolyci … multo quam antea purgatum, & locupletatum. Venice: Lucas Antonius Giunta, 1568. Small 4° (240 x 177mm). Title and calendar printed in red and black, one woodcut illustration, ornamental initials. (2 small holes in title, one touching one letter, some browning and spotting, a few margins lightly waterstained.) Contemporary brown morocco by Jerónimo Ruiz, lavishly decorated in gilt (extremities very lightly rubbed, lacking ties), gilt edges.
VERY ATTRACTIVE ROMAN BINDING BY JERONIMO RUIZ. 'Twenty-four volumes are recorded with the Ruiz arms on the bindings … All the books are in Italian except a copy of Francesco Maurolico’s Martyrologium, Venice, 1568, but since, on the covers of the latter, Jerónimo’s initials are not tooled on either side of the arms, it may have belonged to his uncle [Felipe Ruiz (1512-82)], the Secretary of the Datary’s Office' (Hobson Italian and French 16th-Century Bookbindings). Maurolico was a mathematician and astronomer from Sicily, who was also abbot at the Cattedrale San Nicolò di Messina. Adams M-799; Hobson 17.
