Epaticcus Corn Ear Warrior. Sills class 1, dies 3/9. c.AD25-40. Gold stater. 17-19mm. 5.38g. Central barley ear with [T]AS to left, CIF to right./ Warrior on horse right, holding javelin and shield, EPATI below, C in front, C and V above, beaded border. ABC 1343, VA 575, BMC 2021-23, DK 381, S 355. CCI 11.1425 (this coin). EF, beautiful rose gold, bold and almost complete inscription. Ex John Follows collection. Ex Chawton hoard, Hampshire, 2011-12. VERY RARE type, EXCESSIVELY RARE this die pair, only one other recorded.
The continuing rarity and enduring popularity of Epaticcus gold staters were recently confirmed by one we sold for £7,000 (Auction 163, 17 March 2019, lot 16). Follows’ excellent example is one of only six contained in the famous Chawton Treasure hoard of 105 gold staters and is offered here with its original printed hoard ticket (CCI 11.1425, ref.104, £5500). Illustrated in The Vine Leaf Hoard booklet, 2013, inside front cover and p.4 (this coin); Coin News, December 2013, p.40, and March 2020 (this coin); and The Searcher, February 2014, pp.15 and 16 (this coin). Also published by Dr Ian Leins of the British Museum in The British Numismatic Journal, 2013, pp.266-267 (this coin) and by Dr John Sills in Divided Kingdoms, pp.396 and 412 (this coin). How to bid via Internet.Our Auction is conducted online via www.the-saleroom.com If you wish to bid you must ‘Create an account’ and you will receive an email link confirmation of Registration. This must be activated prior to bidding. You must register to bid for each auction. If you are a new bidder in our sale, please provide numismatic credit references and credit/debit card details to secure any bids you may place. Client data is confidential; we do not share our mailing list or client information unless authorised. We reserve the right to revoke any bids and registrations, restrict accesses, and modify or disable the site or any of its features, at our discretion. Bidding increments. Lots will be sold to the highest bidder for the winning bid. Bidding automatically increases in fixed increments, so you can enter your maximum bid and let our system do the bidding for you. Please ensure your bids comply with the steps outlined below:
Up to £500 in £20 increments
£500-£1000 in £50 increments
£1000-£2000 in £100 increments
£2000-£5000 in £200 increments
Over £5000 in £500 increments
