COOK, JAMES. 1728-1779. A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World. Performed ... In the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1777. 2 volumes. 4to. Printed side notes, engraved portrait of Cook by J. Basire after William Hodges, illustrated with 63 maps, charts and other engravings (33 folding), depicting landscapes, tribal objects and native people. (Occasional spotting, minor tearing to a few maps, title pages a little dusty in vol. 1 and slightly stained in vol. 2, flies and paste-downs lightly browned). Contemporary calf, elaborately gilt tooled spine (rubbed and slightly stained). The FIRST EDITION of the official description of Cook’s second journey and his first as commander of the Resolution (1772-1775). The general purpose of this voyage was to explore the South Pacific and to determine the location and existence of what was called Terra Australis Incognita.
