Papa Pio V (1566-1572).- CATECHISMO | ROMANO DO PAPA | PIO QVINTO DE GLO- | RIOSA MEMORIA. | Nouamente tresladado de latim em lingoagem por manda | do do Illustrissimo, & Reuerendissimo Senhor Dõ Miguel de | Castro Metropolitano Arcebispo de Lisboa, &c.- Impresso em Lisboa: por Antonio Alvarez, impressor. Anno 1590.- [3], 402 f.; 19 cm.- E., A 16th century edition, in the vernacular, of the Tridentine Catechism, whose translator was Friar Cristóvão de Matos, as can be seen from the approval of the inquisitorial censor D. Friar Bartolomeu Ferreira, inserted on the front of the third sheet. The text, completed in 1566, following the determination of the Council of Trent, was intended for the instruction of parish priests and priests in general and not directly for the pastoral care of the faithful. The title page, with a xilograph engraving representing the coat of arms of D. Miguel de Castro, Archbishop of Lisbon, and the following two pages, were composed in black and red. Ownership crossed out on the title page: frey Martim Vasquez; at the end, provisioner's initials: Xpofors. [Christophorus]. Copy a little cropped, but clean. Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (not found in the auction catalogue held in 1940). Full sheepskin binding, not contemporary. Anselmo, 11. National Library (16th Century), 377. Biblioteca de D.
