A most interesting Document, bearing the signature of Oliver Cromwell, concerning the liability of arrest of a widow for the debts of her late husband John Head. The document describes how Mr Head ('of good and religious conversation') having been mortally wounded at the Battle of Dartmouth, died owing £3 to the surgeons who had tried to save his life, 'For which sum his poore widow Joan Head hath binne often threatened to be arrested'.

Cromwell has written 'Release Mrs Head' above his signature alongside those of John Horsham, Simon Worth, John Maye (Constable), Hugh Horsham, Allan Searle and Henry Cole.

The document displays a compassion and sensitivity not always associated with Oliver Cromwell's character
