French Chasseur Officer’s Quality Helmet.
A good example of the pattern of helmet worn by the French cavalry at the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. Silvered skull, with brass line edging. To the front a brass helmet plate embossed with a flaming grenade device. To the left side a brass plume holder supports a replacement cut feather plume. To the crown, is a fine quality gilt metal comb, to each side floral leaf decoration. The front is with a Medusa’s head looking forward, from the comb a flowing black horse hair plume. A pair of flower head circular bosses support a set of velvet backed gilt chin scales. The interior retains it’s original leather lining. Gilt remains fresh, minor age wear.
