A splendid die-stamped rich gilt example. Crowned title strap resting on laurel sprays, silver peacock mounted to voided centre. Stout pagri pin to reverse. VGC Originally raised in 1767 as 16th Bn. Coast Sepoys, became 13th Carnatic Bn. in 1769 renumbered 12th in 1770. 1784 became 12th Madras Bn. becoming 2nd Bn. 8th Regt. Madras Native Infantry in 1796. 1824 became 12th Regt. Madras Native Infantry, then 2nd Burma Bn. in 1890 and 12th Regiment of Madras Infantry in 1891. In the 1903 Kitchener reforms became the 72nd Punjabis.
