Indian Army. 30th Madras Infantry (5th Burma Battalion) Victorian Officer’s 1899 hallmarked silver pouch belt plate.

A fine rare example by H & S bearing Birmingham 1899 hallmarks. Hobnail Garter Star mounted crowned circlet resting an open laurel wreath with XXX at the base; to the centre, bi-part scroll “Burma Battalion” superimposed on the numeral “5”. The wreath resting in a tri-part scroll “Regiment Madras Infantry” which rests on a scroll inscribed “Afghanistan 1878-80”; the crown is flanked by scrolls “Ava” and “Burma”. Two screw posts to reverse. One or two ray tips AF, overall VGC. Became 90th Punjabis in the 1903 Kitchener reforms.
