Royal Marines George III OfficerÕs gorget circa 1802-16.
A very fine and very scarce bright gilt on copper example engraved with 1801-16 Hanovarian Royal Arms over a shield charged with a fouled anchor resting on laurel sprays. The rim of the crescent formed over a wire frame. Minor service wear. Generally VGC
As a result of the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815, the 1816 Treaty of Vienna redrew certain European borders and Hanover became a Kingdom; consequently the device surmounting the Hanovarian escutcheon in the British Royal Arms was altered from an electoral bonnet to a crown.
