3rd Dragoon Guards mid-Victorian OfficerÕs Pillbox Cap.

An interesting example, by FA Stone, Master Tailor, 3rd Dragoon Guards. Blue cap, with band 1 in. wide of gold ÒIrish WaveÓ lace. Purl button to top, edged with gold Russia braid forming eyes and trefoils. Roan leather band and crimson quilted lining. Chinstrap slightly defective, otherwise GC.

The makerÕs details suggest that this cap was made for a quartermaster rather than troop officer. However the 3rd Dragoon Guards served in India from 1857 until 1868, the period from which this cap very probably dates, and during which it seems entirely possible that all officers were obliged to obtain items of uniform from their barrack tailor rather than from the normal London outfitters.
