49th (or The Princess Charlotte of Waless or Hertfordshire) Regiment of Foot Georgian Officers ""Regency"" shako plate circa 1820-29. A splendid, important and excessively rare example. Rich fire gilt crowned oval strap inscribed ""The Princess Charlotte of Waless"", the blue translucent enamel slightly domed centre bearing gilt Union spray surmounted by scroll ""Queens Town"" with central silver numerals ""49"" Two loops to reverse. Separately above, set on a black silk rosette, a gilt band of scales bearing three honour scrolls ""Queens Town"" ""Copenhagen"" and ""Egmont Op Zee"". Minor faults to enamel. VGC During the French Revolutionary Wars the 49th were designated as marines and as such served in the Baltic and fought at the Battle of Copenhagen. 1803 embarked for Quebec and saw much action during the American War of 1812-14. It fought at Queenstown, Fort St. George, Black Rock, Stoney Creek etc. Became 1st Bn. Berkshire Regt. in 1881. Honours ""Copenhagen"" and ""Egmont Op Zee"" authorised 19th February 1820.
