John Henry Foley (Irish, 1818-1874) An impressive late 19th century patinated bronze figure of Oliver Goldsmith, cast by Elkington & Co. The electro cast figure modelled in contrapposto and clad in a frock coat and breeches, his face downcast and his left hand supporting an open book, raised on shallow square plinth base signed to the cast J.H.FOLEY -RA, London, Sc and with Elkington & Co foundry mark, 38cm wide, 30cm deep, 101cm high (14 1/2in wide, 11 1/2in deep, 39 1/2in high) 101cm high Footnotes: Provenance Bonhams, London, Home & Interiors, 27 September 2023, lot 351, where acquired by Sir Brian Williamson Cast in bronze by the Birmingham founders Elkington & Co after a model by the sculptor John Henry Foley, depicting the Irish author Oliver Goldsmith (c.1728–1774), the offered lot is a reduced version of a larger one erected in 1864 outside Trinity College in Dublin which was commissioned along with a pendant statue of the Irish political writer Edmund Burke. Depicted in contemporary dress and looking down reading a book which he holds on his left hand, and with a pen in his right hand, Goldsmith is probably best known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield published in 1766 which was a favourite of nineteenth century Victorian readers. For a comparable figure of identical size probably acquired by Queen Victoria, see The Royal Collection Trust, RCIN 36124. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
