Rauni Higson A silver 'Chockstones' vessel London 2022 Of split navette form, with a naturalistic split with two naturalistically formed rocks in-between, as if stuck, the high plain sides with a brushed surface, the larger section with hand hammered surface to the lower half , height 15.8cm, weight 14.3oz. Footnotes: Chockstones (I) was recently purchased by the V&A, this present work forming part of this new body of work based on close observation of cracks and rocky crags, on a micro and macro scale. Chockstones stuck in cracks are the origin of modern climbing protection, as early adventurers threaded rope around stones stuck in cracks, and then began carrying a pocketful of useful pebbles to place. Biography Rauni Higson is influenced by the wild landscape of Snowdonia, where she has her studio. She draws on this rugged, natural world to capture its feeling, lines and forms. 'Brushstroke' is a representation of line, based on a three-dimensional brushstroke, which generates a shallow dish form. Rauni experiments in copper, before hammer-forming, chasing and caulking directly in silver. A foot, invisible from the top, supports the dish from below. Regarded as one of Britain's leading silversmiths, Rauni Higson is known for distinctive sculptural tableware, largely working to commission, including six pieces housed in the Goldsmiths' Company Collection. Recent commissions include the National Museum of Wales, the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers, the Worshipful Company of Weavers and the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. She was Chair of Contemporary British Silversmiths from 2014-17, overseeing the Silver Speaks programme.
