[Apollo 12] PETE CONRAD CAPTURING A LUNAR PANORAMA: west of LM Intrepid on the Ocean of Storms Alan Bean, 14-24 November 1969, EVA 1 Printed 1969. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS12-47-6899]. With 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the reverse, numbered 'NASA AS12-47-6899' in red in the top margin (issued by NASA Manned Spacecraft Centre, Houston, Texas). 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.). Historical context Capturing history—one frame at a time. Alan Bean snapped this shot just beyond the Solar Wind Collector site, visible in the foreground. Meanwhile, Pete Conrad, at right, is busy composing a panoramic series—the 12 O'clock LM Panorama (as he was facing the LM ladder from a position west of the LM)—which would, in turn, capture Bean taking this very photograph. Behind the LM Intrepid, Surveyor Crater stretches into the distance. To provide scientists with a comprehensive view of their surroundings, Apollo moonwalkers deliberately took overlapping images, allowing geologists and researchers to later stitch them into detailed panoramas for analysis. Footnotes: From the mission transcript when the photograph was taken: 116:21:58 Conrad: I'm heading out to do the pan photographs right now; and, with any luck at all, we'll get back on the timeline and complete what we need. Al's taking shots of the solar wind. And I'm hopping out here to the number 1 slot.
