A WILLIAM MUIR & CO. CIVIL WAR CONTRACT RIFLE-MUSKET, Windsor Locks, Connecticut, 1864. 40 in., .58 caliber, round barrel with rear leaf sight, the faceted breech marked '1864' on the top and 'V/P' over eagle's head proof marks on the left side; flat lock plate with rounded tail marked '1864' and in front of the cock with a spread wing eagle over 'U.S.' and 'WM MUIR & CO./WINDSOR LOCKS, CT'; walnut stock marked 'P.T.D.' behind the trigger guard; steel furniture with sling swivels and steel rammer. Overall lg. 56 in. Condition: Metal cleaned bright but markings are all crisp; stock has scattered dings, dents, scratches and gouges; action functions properly. Footnotes: Note William Muir & Co. produced approximately 30,000 rifle-muskets in 1863-64.
