Footnotes: Provenance Sir Basil Goulding Paintings from the ESB Collection; Adams, 16 December 2014, lot 54, where purchased by the present owner Private Collection, U.K. Exhibited Dublin, Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Patrick Collins Exhibition, April 1965 Patrick Collins was born in County Sligo in 1910 and although he attended evening classes at the National College of Art & Design for a period, he was largely a self-taught artist. He first exhibited at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1950 and continued to exhibit there for the next twenty years and subsequently was included in many important exhibitions most notably the Art's Council of Ireland's modern Irish painting exhibition which toured Europe in 1969. Over the course of his career, he established himself as one of Ireland's foremost painters of the 20th century and was elected an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1980 and Saoi of Aosdána in 1987. The style of his later paintings is characterised by a deep connection with place and his paintings with their misty ethereal hues evoke both the atmosphere of individual places and the connection to mythology and folklore. His work is included in many notable public and private art collections including the Ulster Museum, the National Gallery of Art and the Crawford Municipal Gallery.
