A Judy Garland Costume Sketch of the Poppy Dress by Ray Aghayan, Sketched by Bob Mackie, for The Judy Garland Show CBS, 1963-64. Gouache, watercolor, and ink on illustration board, signed ('Ray Aghayan') to lower right. The wardrobe for The Judy Garland Show, designed by Aghayan, brought out a stylish side of Garland that had not been seen up to that time. The tastefulness of bateau necks, three-quarter-length sleeves, and just the perfect amount of subtle beading in both short and long dresses gave Garland elegance. This particular gown, known as the poppy dress, was inspired by the 'poppy field' scene in The Wizard of Oz (1939) and was a favorite of Garland's. She would wear it in concert as well as on the show. The gown survives and was sold in the Sid Luft Auction in 1978 (Luft was Garland's third husband). A re-creation/variation of it was used in the film Judy (2019), starring Renee Zellweger. As Aghayan's sketch artist, Bob Mackie was learning from the master, and Mackie eventually went on to make an even bigger name for himself in the design world. The Judy Garland Show was a variety show of which only 26 episodes were made (it was up against Bonanza), but it is a time capsule of Garland in superb voice, looking great, and collaborating with a stellar cast and crew. 10.5 x 20 in.
