THREE LACQUER SMALL INRO Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century The first a gold-lacquer three-case inro in the form of a bamboo node, decorated in gold takamaki-e with a scythe lying beneath a large peony blossom, the interior of nashiji, unsigned, 7cm x 3.8cm (2¾in x 1½in); the second decorated in gold takamaki-e with a butterfly hovering over a sprig of chrysanthemums on a nashiji ground, the interior of lacquered wood, unsigned, 5.5cm x 5cm (2 3/16in x 2in); the third of black-lacquer, decorated in gold takamaki-e with pine, bamboo, and plum, inscribed on one side saikan no sanyu zu (a picture of 'The Three Friends of Winter'), with an ojime in the shape of a tsuba applied in high relief of gilt, with chidori (plovers) skimming over waves on one side and an uguisu (bush warbler) perched on a plum branch on the other, unsigned; 6.5cm x 5cm (2 9/16in x 2in).
