An exceedingly rare Bow Masonic plate, circa 1760-65 Of dodecagonal shape, printed in black with the Arms of the Grand Lodge, portions of the print around the border, the motto 'AMOR HONOR ET JUSTITIA' appearing twice, 23cm wide Footnotes: Provenance John A Ainslie Collection, Sotheby's, 7 March 1961 E & J Handley Collection Illustrated by Joseph Handley, 18th Century English Transfer-Printed Porcelain and Enamels (1991), p.196, item 7.9. Also illustrated and discussed by Gordon and Sue Guy-Jones, Bow Porcelain: On-Glaze Prints and Their Sources (2013), pp.54-55, item 35. Octagonal plates were a popular output of the Bow factory but the present lot would appear to be the only recorded twelve-sided example. Gordon and Sue Guy-Jones note the unusual style of the engraving and printing process on the present lot, drawing comparison with the style of Sadler and Green of Liverpool. A Longton Hall mug from the Norman Stretton Collection is printed with very similar arms, the print signed 'Sadler, En'l Liver'l'.
