MATISSE, HENRI. 1869-1954. ALCAFORADO, MARIANNA. Les Lettres Portugaises. Paris: Teriade, 1946. 4to. 15 black and white and 90 color lithographic illustrations on Arches paper, printed by Mourlot. Loose as issued in original lithographed wrappers with glassine, board slipcase. Some staining to wrappers, a light foxing and handling wear to plates, scuffs to slipcase. SIGNED, LIMITED EDITION, number 13 of 270 copies including 20 copies hors-commerce, and one of 80 Deluxe editions with the additional suite of 12 plates. SIGNED in pen by Matisse on the justification page. The passionate letters of a Portuguese nun, Sóror Mariana Alcoforado (1640-1723), to her unfaithful lover, a French officer, was first printed in 1669 to great acclaim.
