MALCOLM X. 1925-1965. Two annotated typescript drafts, the second signed ('Malcolm X,' cancelled in red ink), for parts of 'God's Angry Men,' with numerous corrections in blue ink by Malcolm X, and others in two different inks, 3 pp each (6 pp total), typed rectos only, with caption title to first leaf, and numbered pp 2 & 3, with manuscript identification 'Part 3' and 'Part 4' respectively, parts appearing August 15, 1957, and August 22, 1957, soiling and staining to the leaves, but no text loss. TWO EARLY ANNOTATED TYPESCRIPT DRAFTS FOR MALCOLM X'S COLUMN 'GOD'S ANGRY MEN' IN THE LOS ANGELES HERALD. The column first appeared in April of 1957 in the New York Amsterdam News, before appearing regularly in the Los Angeles Herald from July 1957 to February 1958. The bulk of these two parts appeared in succession in mid-August 1957, on the heels of the brutal NYPD beating of Johnson X. Hinton, which brought Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam national recognition. Both articles are corrected by Malcolm X, who signs at he bottom of the second, which has been crossed out in red pen. Interestingly, in the two preceding paragraphs, he has steadfastly corrected each first person singular to the inclusive first person plural: 'I, myself, We, ourselves, - being one of those who was lost and dead, buried here in the rubbish of the West in the the thickest darkness of sin and ignorance (hoodwinked by the false teachings of the Slavemaster) - amare able to stand upright today, PERPENDICULAR, on the square with my our god (ALLAH) and my our own kind (here and in the East... able for the first time in 400 years to see and hear.' These are rare and important early writings, in draft form, of formational articles for the civil rights leader during his time with the Nation of Islam.
