NORMAN TAUROG'S COPY OF THE WORKING SCRIPT FOR GERSHWIN'S GIRL CRAZY. FINKLEHOFFE, FRED. Mimeographed Manuscript, 'Girl Crazy,' approx. 118 pp, 4to, Culver City, CA, January 4, 1943, with original yellow MGM covers featuring printed label to upper cover, signed by director Norman Taurog and heavily tabbed and annotated throughout by him, bound in full polished calf with gilt art deco design to upper cover, spine reback preserving original labels. Girl Crazy (MGM 1943), based on the stage play of the same name, was the penultimate film collaboration between Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. Featuring music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, the show followed the exploits of Danny (Rooney), whose father pulls him out of Yale and sends him to an all-male school in the west to curb his womanizing. The film was originally to be directed by Busby Berkeley, who had helmed the previous Garland-Rooney films Babes in Arms (1939), Strike Up the Band (1940), and Babes on Broadway (1941). Berkeley was fired from the production, however, and Norman Taurog, famous for his steady hand, was brought in to finish the film. This is Taurog's personal working script from the 1943 production, no doubt issued to him when he arrived on set in February of 1943. Taurog has carefully tabbed his script at each significant change of scene or set, making it easy to move to whatever section is to be shot. He's added several dialogue changes and notes on the script ('This business should start sooner' p 19) and marks through a page horizontally when shot. On the verso of 101A he's added notes on filming with a wider angle and rewritten a few lines of dialogue. In all, a remarkable record of the production of an MGM movie musical classic.
