TOSA SCHOOL Six Scenes from The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari) Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century Six fragments of a folding screen in ink, colors, and gold on paper, each scene surrounding by gold-foil clouds decorated in moriage relief patterns Each scene mounted separately and framed, four are glazed the largest 13 1/2 x 19 1/4in (34.3 x 48.9cm) visible under mat the smallest 9 1/2 x 18 3/4in (24.1 x 47.6cm) visible under mat Footnotes: The scenes from The Tale of Genji depicted in the present lot are as follows, in chapter order: chapter 3, Utsusemi (Genji watches two women playing the board game go); chapter 4, Yūgao (a visit to a home covered in the flowers known as 'evening faces'); chapter 10, Sakaki (Genji delivers a spray of sakaki tree with a poem paper tied around it in order to bid farewell to a former lover); chapter 35, Wakana II (the ladies of the Rokujō mansion play a concert); chapter 38, Suzumushi (Genji paints on the face of a fan); and chapter 41, Maboroshi (Genji consults with a priest while gazing at his recently deceased wife's favorite prunus tree).
