THREE LARGE BLANC-DE-CHINE FIGURES OF BUDAI 17th/18th century Each with jovial expressions and covered in creamy-white glazes, one carved seated with his detachable right hand holding a pearl and wearing a long rosary, on a oval low plinth, wood stand, 19cm (7 1/2in) high; one with the figure sprawled to the left, holding a rosary on his raised left knee, wood stand, 20cm (8in) wide; one with the figure raised on a rocky plinth, clasping a ruyi in his right hand, 19cm (7 1/2in) high. Footnotes: 十七/十八世紀 德化窰布袋和尚坐像 三件 Provenance: a Swiss private collection, and thence by descent 來源:瑞士私人收藏,並由後人保存迄今 A native of Zhejiang Province, Budai (his name refers to his large sack which in Chinese is called budai 布袋) is regarded as an incarnation of Maytreya, the Buddha of the Future.
